One Sword
A downloadable game for Windows
About the game
One Sword is a short prototype platformer built around a single elegant mechanic: throwing your sword to interact with the world.
Your only tool is your blade — but it’s versatile. Use it to:
- Hit distant switches
- Defeat enemies
- Create a temporary platform to reach new places
Currently, the game contains just one simple level made with basic colored shapes — it’s purely a gameplay prototype made for a class.
Controls
- Move left and right: Q, D or Left/Right arrows
- Jump: Z or Spacebar
- Throw or catch the sword: Left mouse click (must be near the sword to catch it)
Gameplay elements
- Gray rectangle: Sword — use it as a platform, to attack enemies, or activate switches
- Yellow rectangle: Switch — activates doors when hit by the sword
- White rectangle: Door — opens and closes with switches
- Red sphere: Enemy — moves left and right, defeated by hitting with the sword
- Blue rectangles: Water — avoid, the player cannot swim
- Green/gray rectangles: Ground and walls — no special properties; the sword can be planted in walls
Context
This project was made during a game design course focused on developing elegant, single-mechanic gameplay concepts. While the game world and story were part of the exercise, they are not represented in this prototype.
The goal was to test how far one mechanic can be stretched and adapted through a level.
Playtime
Very short — around 2 to 5 minutes depending on how fast you solve the puzzles.
